And Speaking of Brooklyn and Snow, It’s the Danza Moment(s) of the Week!

Keeping with today’s Brooklyn theme (not to be confused with today’s ripping people off theme, or today’s “and speaking of” theme, or yesterday’s robot theme), check out the first few minutes of the Who’s the Boss? pilot, as Tony and Samantha pack up his windowless child molester van old, beat-up blue van and depart the Universal Studios backlot Brooklyn.  As a bonus, we’ve included the original opening credits, which feature additional footage of the iconic van’s journey to the Bower home in Connecticut (no footage of the cast?  How bold!  Perhaps, an homage to the Taxi opening?)

Vodpod videos no longer available.

In addition, keeping with today’s snow theme, here’s a short clip of Danza from Taxi that can serve as your go-to video the next time a blizzard rolls through:

And speaking of ripping people off, was this Taxi clip perhaps the inspiration for the Bosom Buddies cabin episode?  Makes you think.

And Speaking of Williamsburg, Today is 1.12.11 (Williams’ Burg?)

Which is the zip code for the Brooklyn neighborhood, the snow-covered part of the borough where Jumped the Snark operates from (thanks to comic genius Mike Still for pointing this out).  The area is much maligned for its preponderance of hipsters, but, let’s face it, it offers better bars and better restaurants and better coffee and better pizza than everywhere else.  If you don’t live here (or in the 11222), you’re probably just jealous (plus it offers easy access to the Long Island Expressway without having to live in Queens).

In honor of this once in a century occasion, we could have gone with the Hipster Olympics, shot all around 11211, most notably in its McCarren Park, but let’s mark this momentous day with something a little more recent, a little less anti-hipster.  We’re speaking, of course, of Brian Williams’ story of the year, a brilliant monologue we’re sure you have seen (we hope!), but absolutely adore.  Williams doesn’t name the neighborhood specifically, only utilizing the borough-general term “Brooklyn,” but when he mentions ironic glassframes and artisanal cheeses, you know he’s really talking about Williamsburg.

Need more Williamsburg related content?  Here’s a scene from Delocated shot inside Bedford Ave’s Spacecraft.

Make sure to celebrate with some small batch coffee and locally sourced meats!

Planet Hoth: Giving Credit Where Credit is Due

Unlike Stephen Colbert and Rolling Stone magazine, here at Jumped the Snark we’ll admit it when we borrow from others, which is why we’re obligated to point out that background image used in our current website header is not our own, but courtesy of fellow Williamsburg resident Henry Hargreaves.  During the Blizzmageddon Hargreaves had the genius vision of Brooklyn as Hoth, photoshopping Empire Strikes Back characters and vehicles onto the snow-white Williamsburg canvas, including Luke and Han gathering their bearings in front of the Hess station on Metropolitan Ave.  In fact, it was the composite of the AT-AT used in our header that informed us that we should probably wait another day or two before returning to Brooklyn after the storm, as in the distance we spotted a White Castle, and knew that the ice planet Hoth in these photos was just mere blocks from our own apartment.  So, Mr. Hargreaves, we owe you a debt of gratitude for not just creating these brilliant images (which we’ve gladly appropriated), but also for tipping us off to the horrible post-blizzard conditions in the neighborhood.  May the Force be with you.

Alright, Luke, time to take down that AT-AT.  Let’s not deprive local residents of their Crave Cases any longer.

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Mr. Sunshine

Kudos to you out there who searched for “jimmy fallon ny magazine” because you came to the right place.  Because it’s only here at Jumped the Snark that  you’ll find the subscriber-only cover offering this uplifting image:

Isn’t that just what you need to get through the dog days of winter?

And it’s not like us to give you just one Jimmy Fallon-related item.  No, of course not.  Not when Fallon is still riding the hot streak he began in the fall of 2009.  It was another big show on Late Night last Friday, as friends Will Arnett and Horatio Sanz lent their talents to the truly delightful “Pro Bowl Shuffle,” just in time for NFL wild card weekend (notice how they didn’t predict any Jets players participating in the Pro Bowl.  Betting that they’ll be too busy with the Super Bowl, perhaps?).

And then Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow, the proprietors of the Lower East Side’s The Meatball Shop, stopped by to cook up a few dishes and mix up a cocktail we’ll soon try ourselves (the “port-toddy”).  While they should leave the “ball” humor to the masters, it was nice to put a face on the balls we’ve been eating these past six months (see?  We can’t pull it off either), and we’re especially excited about the upcoming Williamsburg off-shoot of the shop (we’re coming for all your pork meatball smashes with classic tomato and mozzarella).  Spring can’t come soon enough!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

See?  Things aren’t so bad after all.  Not when we have Jimmy Fallon and Late Night to keep our spirits high and the Meatball Shop to keep our bellies full.

‘Top Chef All-Stars’: It’s Chinatown (It’s Gross)

Before we talk out last night’s Top Chef: All-Stars, we need to talk about our feelings regarding Chinatown.

Chinatown is our least favorite part of Manhattan.  That is, of course, if you even choose to consider the neighborhood part of Manhattan, which we have trouble doing.  We recently had the misfortune of reporting to an office in the heart of Chinatown everyday, and it was a miserable experience (going to Chinatown, not the job).  The Grand St. B-D station is our least favorite stop along the New York City subway’s 656 miles of track.1 We’ve long detested the experience of exiting that station, being hit with the foul stench of imported fish, most pungent in the mornings when the seafood is “fresh.”  The neighborhood is a visual and olfactory nightmare of rotting fish, fruit with horns, garbage and garbage juice.

We’ll finish our discussion on Chinatown and get to the recap once Padma’s done fashionably searching for buried treasure…

Gratuitious Search Term Bait of the Day: Hot Stuff Coming Through

Nice and easy today with the term “swedish chef.”  But, instead of offering up a Muppet Show clip, which might have been the obvious choice, we’re going to use this as yet another opportunity to showcase one of our favorite Muppet outings, The Muppets at Walt Disney World.  This also allows us to enjoy another one of our most beloved Muppets, Beaker, who in this clip seeks out the Chef’s help in extricating himself from a rather tight situation.

And with that we’re off to make some chili!

Cabin Fever

We’re snowed in on Long Island and going rather stir crazy.  This would have been the perfect opportunity for our long-gestating Saved by the Bell marathon, but, unfortunately, we recently brought all five seasons back to Brooklyn for that very occasion.  It’s like Gift of the Magi, but with Screech instead of a comb.

So hopefully we’ll take this predicament as an opportunity to write, reflect, and ponder the nature of man.  In other words, let’s turn snow into snowade.  And thanks to our mother’s refusal to pass up a discount and our father’s love of soup, we have enough provisions to last through another dozen Snowreckonings.  Certainly, we feel more prepared than Kip & Henry.

[Part 2]

While we tend to side with their conclusion about the nature of man, Community might disagree.  What do you think?

YOU DECIDE.

We Weigh In on the Alleged Rex Ryan Foot Fetish Videos

Vodpod videos no longer available.

(In case you missed it)

And if you were directed to this site after searching for “foot fetish,” we’re sorry to disappoint.  But you’re certainly welcome to look around and enjoy our many Muppet posts, which, now that we think about it, might still work for some of you.

Top Chef Contestants are Just Like Us!

Not, not because we also wear Crocs!  GROSS!

But because we have the same taste in bagels as Top Chef: Chicago cheftestant Nikki Cascone.

Cascone kept a week-long diary of her meals for Grub Street’s Diet of the Week, and had this to say about her Saturday morning:

Second breakfast. I HAD to have one of my favorites: two eggs over-medium, Swiss cheese, and turkey bacon on a whole-wheat bagel from La Bagel Delight in Brooklyn. Take it from a born-and-raised New York girl: They are the best bagels in New York.

(it should be noted that Cascone is extremely pregnant and that is why she has been eating multiple breakfasts, NOT because she is a hobbit)

We could not agree more with Cascone’s assesment of Bagel Delight, which has long been our favorite bagel shop in the borough, nay, the whole world (just ask our brother in LA, whom we overnighted bagels for his birthday a couple years back.  La Bagel Delicious).  And we also respect Cascone’s sandwich order, although when we splurge we go for real bacon.  Can’t do better than the genuine article.  And, at that point, why get a whole wheat bagel?  Just go for the gusto, Brooklyn!

We also have to commend Cascone for having the courage to open a restaurant that specializes in Jew food, Octavia’s Porch, which is set to open at the end of the month.  Take it from a born and a raised Long Island Jew, we’d rather eat pizza.  But if she’s set on trying to make gefilte fish more palatable, well, god bless her.

And if any of you stop in at La Bagel Delight, ask for Frank or Amanda and tell ’em Seth sent you.

(can we also add how excited we are for Top Chef: All-Stars, premiering December 1?  We can?  Great!  We’re super excited for Top Chef:All-Stars, premiering December 1.  Can’t wait to see what kind of Crocs Marcel is going to wear)

More Gigglefests on ‘Boomer & Carton’: Making Fun of Blind People!

WFAN’s morning show Boomer & Carton is becoming to the go-to place for miggles (man giggles).  Last week, Craig Carton spurred co-host Boomer Esiason to launch one of the all-time great spit-takes.  This morning, during a conversation with caller “Blind Mike,” Carton demonstrated his lack of experience with the physically handicapped, sending Boomer into another laughing fit.

(Apparently, Carton was not content letting Today have all the chuckles at someone else’s misfortune)

And the miggles didn’t stop there.  “Blind Mike” had called in as a contestant on Boomer & Carton’s weekly sports quiz “Do You Know More Sports Than…” in which they pit a male listener against an attractive local female, usually a waitress from LI or NJ (basically an excuse to bring in and ogle a pretty lady).  Carton, perhaps feeling guilty about his earlier remarks, immediately tossed a Mike a softball, and Boomer lost it once again.

Sadly, “Blind Mike” lost.  There is no justice in this world.

Oh, and speaking of David Paterson…
