Ladies and Gentlemen, Your Next Movie Star Part 2 (Cup Checking Higgins)

Just when we thought we couldn’t like Jason Sudeikis anymore – the guy loves wings AND beer – he goes ahead and tops himself.  We figured he’d peaked last week with his Buffalo Wild Wings and Natty Light fueled appearance on Conan; how could be possibly endear himself to us anymore than that?  But then he flew back east and just flat-out dominated last Friday’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, sprinkling his infectious charm over the whole show, culminating with a spontaneous attack on Higgins (aka Higgbones) while the two sample some  gourmet grilled cheese.  Just watch and delight.

Earlier in the show Sudeikis joined Fallon for a round of “Long Pour,” further establishing Sudeikis as today’s foremost beer-drenched comedian.  Jason, you like beer, we like beer, what’s say we get together and like beer together?

Last Week on ‘Top Chef’: The Boorgerman

If you thought we couldn’t keep up our habit of recapping Top Chef just before the new episode premieres, then you were wrong.  DEAD WRONG.  So here we go! (note: our DVR ran out of space when recording this episode so we cannot provide our usual primary source materials.  Sorry!)

  • For the Quickfire challenge they made fondue!  Just like a party my parents might have!  But Carla was struggling and lamented the fact that there was never any time.
  • Time to sample the dishes!  Padma seemed to particularly enjoy Tiffany’s entry.

Read on: Product placement, Fabio struggles with basic English words, Dale steals from our personal recipe book, Carla gets more and more unbearable, and Jimmy Fallon, Steve Higgins and A.D. Miles are adorable.

TONIGHT: Russell vs. Boston Rob Round 2 (Oh, and the Premiere of ‘Survivor: Redemption Island’)

February 16th is finally here and tonight is closing in fast.  Which means that, after literally weeks of anticipation, Survivor: Redemption Island premieres this evening.  But, more importantly, that means the epic, long-awaited, dream come true, clash of the titans showdown between Russell Hantz and Boston Rob is nearly upon us.

When their return was announced a few weeks back we quickly voiced our initial skepticism.  And in the intervening time our feelings haven’t really changed.  We’re still extremely hesitant about this twist, bringing Rob back for his fourth go ’round and Russell for his third attempt in four seasons, because their personal battle genuinely threatens to be bigger than the game, and we’re nervous about what it means for future seasons.  The initial returns could be astronomical, but we could be trading long-term satisfaction for immediate gratification.

But it’s hard to watch this and not get excited.  We’re excited.

More: Early predictions that may surprise you. And Jeff Probst teases the future!

Was That Special? Dana Carvey Returns to ‘SNL’ And Our Childhood Officially Ends

We’re going to warn you right off the bat that this is probably going to be the most subjective SNL recap we’ve yet written.  So if you like your SNL analysis free of emotional attachment, well, then you should look somewhere else (we’re sure the web might offer one, maybe two, other options), because, unfortunately, as we watched this last SNL, hosted by legendary cast member Dana Carvey, our reaction was intrinsically bound up in how we’ve watched this show since childhood, and how the this particular episode made us reexamine and reassess our feelings about the show, Dana Carvey and his SNL era.  So, at the extreme risk of being self-indulgent, here we go.

Read on: We mourn our youth and ask the question: who is Dana Carvey?

Kick It!

One time Bobby Tisdale bought us a drink.  He was super nice.  He’s one of those people about whom you think to yourself “that guy is super nice.”  So watch him on Late Night kicking the hell out of stuff, putting life and limb in jeopardy for our amusement.

Good thing Jimmy stood back.  Wouldn’t want him getting injured like that time Kimbo Slice came by.

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Gold Medley

Today it appears that many of you found this blog by searching for “jimmy fallon tgif themes,” ostensibly referring to the TGIF theme song medley performed on Late Night last April by a capella superstars Straight No Chaser.  While those readers were on the right track, the video from Late Night is, unfortunately, no longer available.  However, fret not, because we’re going to do better than that TGIF-only medley.  Below, find a more inclusive sitcom medley from Straight No Chaser, one that will satisfy your TGIF cravings (Full House, Perfect Strangers), but will also ask you to show them that smile again.

And, just because, here’s SNC (as their fans lovingly refer to them) with their rendition of one of our all-time favorite jams:

It’s Wednesday night and, thanks to Straight No Chaser, we feel all right (also, we’re getting pizza!).

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Mr. Sunshine

Kudos to you out there who searched for “jimmy fallon ny magazine” because you came to the right place.  Because it’s only here at Jumped the Snark that  you’ll find the subscriber-only cover offering this uplifting image:

Isn’t that just what you need to get through the dog days of winter?

And it’s not like us to give you just one Jimmy Fallon-related item.  No, of course not.  Not when Fallon is still riding the hot streak he began in the fall of 2009.  It was another big show on Late Night last Friday, as friends Will Arnett and Horatio Sanz lent their talents to the truly delightful “Pro Bowl Shuffle,” just in time for NFL wild card weekend (notice how they didn’t predict any Jets players participating in the Pro Bowl.  Betting that they’ll be too busy with the Super Bowl, perhaps?).

And then Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow, the proprietors of the Lower East Side’s The Meatball Shop, stopped by to cook up a few dishes and mix up a cocktail we’ll soon try ourselves (the “port-toddy”).  While they should leave the “ball” humor to the masters, it was nice to put a face on the balls we’ve been eating these past six months (see?  We can’t pull it off either), and we’re especially excited about the upcoming Williamsburg off-shoot of the shop (we’re coming for all your pork meatball smashes with classic tomato and mozzarella).  Spring can’t come soon enough!

See?  Things aren’t so bad after all.  Not when we have Jimmy Fallon and Late Night to keep our spirits high and the Meatball Shop to keep our bellies full.

Carrey On, Jimmy

In a little over 24 hours from now Jim Carrey will return to SNL for the first time since 1996, and there’s absolutely no way its going to satisfy our expectations.  We’ve already made the fatal mistake of building it up in our heads, so there’s no way it’s not going to be a colossal disappointment.  Nevertheless, we’re excited!

And while Carrey was inside 30 Rock he stopped over at Late Night to chat with another Jim.  Behold, Carrey on Fallon:

Part 2

Wow, lots of energy from Carrey.  Makes us wonder if he’s been riding the snake.  Sure would help with the weight loss.

See you soon, Jim!  Hope you’re ready to shatter our dreams!

Our Favorite ‘Late Night’ A Capella Group Returns: Do it again, Rockafallon!

It’s really hard to pinpoint when we fully realized the genius of Late Night with Fallon, because there have been so many brilliant moments, like the California Dreams reunion, or the Muppets dropping by to sing “The 12 Days of Christmas”, or the visit from Zack Morris, or the Lost homage “Late,” or the Parks & Recreation-assisted Glee‘d version of “We’re Not Gonna Take It.”  It’s really been an incredible twelve months for Jimmy Fallon and his team, whom we’ve  praised over and over again, and plan to keep doing so.  But, for us, there was perhaps no greater pop-culture tribute than Late Night‘s very own incarnation of the a capella legends Rockapella, which they gifted us in March of this year.  Lost, Glee, even Saved by the Bell, those are rather obvious objects of affection.  But to channel something like Where in the World is Carmen San Diego?‘s house band, well that’s truly special, and perhaps more than anything else Late Night has done that showed the depth of their knowledge, humor, intelligence, and a disturbing awareness of references from our childhood that we will go crazy for.

And, just in time for the holiday season, they’ve done it again (this time with more Jason Segel!):

Hats off, once again, gentleman.  Brava.

By the way, did you know that Rockapella founder Sean Altman auditioned for Season 1 of NBC’s The Sing-Off with his new a capella group the GrooveBarbers?  They didn’t make the cut.  Which somehow feels like if Marcel Marceau was rejected from a mime competition.  Must have been the name.  Oh, and it sorta sounds like he’s taking credit for the success of The Sing Off.  Sure, why not?

Jimmy, let’s get this guy on the show.

And Christmas Has Come Early…

…with the news that the Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made, initially slated to arrive on Christmas 2011, has been pushed up a month to Thanksgiving (yes, we admit that this news is a little outdated, but we’d be remiss not to mention it at all).  So rejoice this Christmas, Muppet fans, knowing that a new, fantastic, Muppet movie is less than a year away.

In very much related news, here’s Jason Segel on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon describing his first encounter with Kermit:

We imagine we’d react the same way.

Anyone know if Hanukkah falls on Thanksgiving next year?  That would certainly qualify as a miracle.
