A little over thirteen years after his first memorable appearance, 3rd Rock from the Sun star French Stewart made an unexpected return to Jeopardy this week, under the obvious pseudonym Barry Peterson. Unfortunately, even though he’s learned to open his eyes, he once again failed in his promise to bloom in Double Jeopardy.

It’s officially over now. Sue Simmons signed off NBC 4 New York nightly news for the final time last Friday night, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the studio (or on our face). However, the night was not without some touching tributes from local personalities who love Sue just as much as we do, including some former and current New York Mets. It certainly says something about Sue that she inspires such adulation in the people who we ourselves revere. She’s bigger than New York sports, bigger than Jimmy Fallon, and, now, bigger than NBC News. Here’s hoping we see her again real soon (please, please take up Terry Collin’s offer).

We don’t talk about it much anymore, because it’s like pointing out that the sun rose in the East, it’s just the immutable truth, but Jimmy Fallon continues to be brilliant on Late Night, late night in and late night out. His latest, The Evolution of Dad Dancing, is just the latest in what is now a multi-year string of genius, originality and unbridled fun.
(and, if you’re wondering, our Dad’s trademark dance falls somewhere in between the “Clap When You Want To” and the “Until You Hurt Your Back”)

Doesn’t it speak volumes, though, that Stephen Colbert chose to do this performance not on his show, but on Jimmy Fallon’s? Even Colbert knows that Late Night is the most fun, inventive, irreverent game in town these days. So, supreme kudos all around.

Just when we thought we couldn’t like Jason Sudeikis anymore – the guy loves wings AND beer – he goes ahead and tops himself. We figured he’d peaked last week with his Buffalo Wild Wings and Natty Light fueled appearance on Conan; how could be possibly endear himself to us anymore than that? But then he flew back east and just flat-out dominated last Friday’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, sprinkling his infectious charm over the whole show, culminating with a spontaneous attack on Higgins (aka Higgbones) while the two sample some gourmet grilled cheese. Just watch and delight.

In just two short weeks Survivor competitor Phillip has already become a legend on this blog, taking his spot in the Jumped the Snark Hall of Fame with Tom Westman, Rashida Jones, Jason Sudeikis, Anderson Cooper, Guy Fieri, Jimmy Fallon and Tom Hanks. So it’s no surprise that one of our top search terms today was “survivor phillip.”
We talked about Phillip at length in last week’s Survivor recap and posted the clip of what will probably be his signature Survivor moment – hunting a crab with a spear clad only in his cherry red skivvies – but here’s a very quick moment of Phillip at his creepy, confident best (and a gratuitous cleavage shot) from later in that show. We weren’t able to include it the first time around, but we’re pleased to bring it to you now. Thanks for the second chance, everyone! Redemption all around.

There’s literally nothing we like more than Saturday Night Live retrospectives. Okay, well, maybe we like pizza, beer, the Muppets, 1986 Mets retrospectives and maps more. But really that’s about it. And it’s close. Which is why we were so extremely disappointed in last week’s “new” two-hour prime-time special SNL Backstage. We were eager for the broadcast all week, making sure to set our DVRs before heading out to Philadelphia for the weekend. We were far more excited about it than any regular episode of SNL all season, save for Jim Carrey’s return. And from those great expectations came a great letdown.
The show was billed as, or so it seemed to us, a look behind the scenes at SNL, which we thought meant going beyond the origin of sketches and past cast changes and instead delving further into the process of the show, bringing us stories and details not found in the previous behind the scenes specials (SNL in the 80s: Lost and Found, SNL in the 90s: Pop Culture Nation, SNL in the 00s: Time and Again). Indeed, judging from the promo, we were going to be treated to some new never heard before insights and, most intriguing to us, a glimpse at how they pull up a live show with so many set and costume changes. What we thought we’d be getting was a truly illuminating look under the hood of SNL, an expose on all its moving parts.
