In Memorium: Kid

We weren’t even three years-old when the Mets won the World Series in 1986, but that team has come to define our life.  We don’t remember much, if anything, from that time, but we watched and rewatched and wore out 1986: A Year to Remember, the VHS yearbook of that magical season, and even if those memories weren’t burned onto our cerebral cortex in that October, we don’t recall a time when we didn’t know that team, when Mex, Doc, Darryl, Nails and Kid weren’t our heroes.  The only other similar experience for us was the 1994 Rangers, and while we continue to revere that team  – especially captain and messiah Mark Messier – their impact on us is not as great as the ’86 Mets.  In ’94 we were old enough to choose the Rangers, but the ’86 Mets essentially chose us.  For better or worse.  That would be the team against which we would measure every other team against for the rest of our lives.  And we know that, no matter what, because of that team’s success, and promise, and its ultimate shortcomings, no team will ever match it in our hearts and minds.

Despite the fact that we’re not left-handed and don’t play first base, we gravitated towards Keith Hernandez.  He was our guy.  It was the intangibles, the way he approached the game with a a cerebral approach, the way he made the players around him better, the way he was a leader and a champion.  But we also knew, as A Year to Remember made clear, that Keith wasn’t alone in leading that team.  Gary Carter, he of the wide, indefatigable smile, the king the curtain call, shared that role with Keith.  If Mex was the brains of that team, Kid was the heart.  Keith was the field general, Gary was their spiritual guide.  They made each other better, and together they willed that team to win.  And in doing so left an indelible mark on so many of us.  They were the rock.

That was the first time we ever heard the world “effervescent” and we’ve associated it with Gary Carter ever since.

Thanks, Kid.

Parting Shot: Avocad-NO

Maybe they should have left this one in California.  Or learn the difference between avocados and guacamole.

Yep, They Did It Again (Again)

Last fall the brilliant ladies at Broad City blew our minds with “Do the Right Thing,” their Spike Lee tribute first season finale.  Those beautiful four and a half minutes set the bar pretty much impossibly high. But, not surprisingly, stars Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson found a way to rise to the occasion, delivering a pitch perfect love letter to New York City, complete with a couple delicious cameos from some familiar faces (not to mention a cameo from a delicious treat).  It’s truly poetry, and comedy, in motion.

We don’t know how they’ll top this, but we’re certain that they will.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, From Uncle O’Grimacey!

If we show up in your list of Gchat contacts (which, we admit, is unlikely) you may have noticed that our icon (or avatar!) is a green, more Irish-looking, version of the McDonaldland character Grimace (who himself is the icon (or avatar!) for our personal website (which, we admit, is in dire need of a revamp).  That roly-poly green creature (also seen in our header above) is, of course, Uncle Grimacey, Grimace’s uncle (on his father’s side, obviously), who was trotted out by McDonald’s in the late 80s to promote their minty St. Patty’s-themed concoction, the Shamrock Shake.  So in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, and the Shamrock Shake (and the end of the March holiday blitz), we bring you Uncle O’Grimacey at the height of his fame:

And, yes, we got a Shamrock Shake today.  Duh.

We once spent no joke two hours going down the Wikipedia-YouTube rabbit hole reading about and then watching the classic McDonaldland characters (and then reading about and watching (and then reading about and watching (and so on (and so on)))), and we recommend you do the same.  Just start here and we’ll see you in the morning.

(and we think we just broke the record for most unnecessary parenthetical digressions in a 200-word post (congrats!)).

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: No Idea (Every Search Term is a Snowflake)

SO!  Today’s search term is “muppet of dolphin.”  And, as the title of this post indicates, we have no idea what that means (maybe it’s late and we’re tired and in the morning it’ll make sense, but not now).  So, here’s our best guess to approximate what you out there might have been looking for.

Our favorite Dolphin related scene!

A video featuring Lew Zealand, a Muppet whose trademark is throwing fish!

And, finally, my new Muppet (possibly named Lewis) from the FAO Schwarz Muppet Whatnot Workshop!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Your Next Movie Star (And He’s Just Like Us)

As if Jason Sudeikis needed to endear himself to us even more, he went on Conan last night that and showed that he’s into the exact same things we are: beer and wings.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

After the jump we detail our very personal experiences with Natty Light and Buffalo Wild Wings

Last Week on ‘Top Chef’: An Intersection on the Venn Diagram of Things That We Love

A new Top Chef in just a few hours.  But can anything top last week’s episode with featuring Sesame Street AND Target?  Probably not!

A few highlights!

  • COOKIE MONSTER.  DUH!
  • Elmo suggests perhaps making a cookie out of zucchini and daikon and dirt and cobwebs and rice cakes and Canadian pennies.  Luckily, Cookie Monster tells him to shut the fuck up.
  • Cookie Monster invokes the five second rule and is pretty much just the best.

The Best

More: Cookie Time! And then it’s off to Target for a slumber party! Bring your green hat!

Last Week on ‘Top Chef’: The Boorgerman

If you thought we couldn’t keep up our habit of recapping Top Chef just before the new episode premieres, then you were wrong.  DEAD WRONG.  So here we go! (note: our DVR ran out of space when recording this episode so we cannot provide our usual primary source materials.  Sorry!)

  • For the Quickfire challenge they made fondue!  Just like a party my parents might have!  But Carla was struggling and lamented the fact that there was never any time.
  • Time to sample the dishes!  Padma seemed to particularly enjoy Tiffany’s entry.

Read on: Product placement, Fabio struggles with basic English words, Dale steals from our personal recipe book, Carla gets more and more unbearable, and Jimmy Fallon, Steve Higgins and A.D. Miles are adorable.
