Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: The Ice Queen

One of our consistently most popular posts is our review of January Jones’ turn as host of SNL from November of 2009, titled January Jones Was the Worst Host Ever on the Worst Episode of ‘SNL’ Ever, so it’s not surprising that among today’s top search terms is “january jones worst host.”  But we’re not going to talk about how terrible she was that night (we’ve spent enough time on that), nor are we going to discuss how horrible we thought she was on Mad Men.  No, today we’re going to talk about an upcoming January Jones project that we fear might be just as bad.

Earlier this week the first images from X-Men: First Class surfaced, featuring January Jones as the White Queen Emma Frost, and it doesn’t look promising.  To Jones’ credit, the whole photo is panic-inducing, not just her part of it (although the look on her face doesn’t help).

To be fair, director Matthew Vaughn has shot back asserting that this is an unofficial photo that does not reflect the look of the film.  Which is somewhat reassuring.  Still, that doesn’t make us comfortable with the idea of Jones as Frost, and nor does it assuage our concern that once again an X-Men movie has chosen to neglect the many proven storylines in favor of a hodgepodge of plot points and characters from the comics combined with an original narrative.  It just seems silly to disregard so many revered and beloved stories.  And by setting this film in the 60s, and including characters who appear in the other films or are related to characters in the other films, it totally confuses the cinematic timeline.  We won’t get into the geeky specifics here, but this is why bringing a comic book to the screen can be so complicated.  In the comic book world super heroes really don’t age, so it’s no big deal for someone to look the same in 1965 as they do in 2005.  But it becomes much trickier with movies, and we think setting this film decades before the previous X-Men films invites too many contradictions.  But we’ll just have to wait until June to find out.

And come back here then to read our review, “January Jones Was the Worst Actress in the Worst X-Men Film Ever.”

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Oedipal Complex

We expect to often see search terms like “justin bieber” and “miranda cosgrove,” and to a lesser, but more encouraging, extent “rashida jones” and “tom westman,” but it surprised us how often one of our top results has been “nasim pedrad,” the talented and pretty comedian now in her sophomore season on SNL.  Not that we think that she doesn’t warrant that kind of attention, but it’s intriguing that web surfers have taken a particular interest in Pedrad, considering that SNL has no shortage of attractive and funny female cast members (Kristen Wiig, Abby Elliott, Vanessa Bayer, Jenny Slate until this season).  Then again, it’s not terribly shocking, as Pedrad has continued to impress us with her diversity and poise, deftly portraying women like Kim Kardashian, Azam Farahi (aka Mrs. Ahmadinejad) and Cristiane Amanpour, as well as performing Lil Blaster in the Underground Records commercials.

Pedrad has also fallen into the unfortunate pattern of playing hyperactive, loquacious, often male, teenagers, which has been the only knock against her so far.  However, despite that, our favorite performance from Pedrad was as wise beyond her years teenager Bedilia, a confident young lady who exhibits just a little too much appreciation for her parents.

See?  She more than holds her own against Alec Baldwin there.  If Pedrad can excise those other, more annoying, less successful characters then we see no reason why she won’t be one of our most popular search terms for years to come.

Gratuitous Search Bait of the Day: Who’s to Say?

Back to basics today: “snl emma stone”

There were several valid options for this one (in fact, the more we think about it, the more we liked that episode), but we’re going to go with the sketch that was far and away our favorite, even though we used a few seconds of it last week.  With pleasure, we welcome back Sex Ed Vincent:

Christmas Clipdown: For the Kids

Twenty years later, Home Alone is quickly becoming one of our all-time favorite  movies.  What’s interesting is that now we enjoy the middle section just as much (if  not more) than the third act battle between Kevin and the Wet Bandits (the defense of the McCallister house was infinitely more appealing to a 7-year-old).   These days we’re more interested in how Kevin confronts life in the absence of his family, under the assumption that he must now fend for himself.  Once buzz of  jumping on the bed and the eating bowl after bowl of ice cream and going through Buzz’s stuff wears off, Kevin realizes he needs to be the man of the house.   Never has a kid grown up quicker.  Like this scene when he pays for groceries with a coupon no less! (fun fact: we’ve always kind of had a crush on the check out girl.  Just liked her skeptical yet caring tone.  So, Tracy J. Conor, when you no doubt read this, know that your work has not gone unnoticed).

But our least favorite part of the film is that Kevin doesn’t have a chance to find out if those microwave dinners are any good.  As you all remember, he prepares the mac and cheese, but before he can sample the “nutritious meal” the clock strikes eight and he quickly runs off to get ready for the impending attack.  That always bothered us.  Take a fucking bite, dude!  Would it slow you down that much?  Would the timing of Angels With Filthy Souls have been thrown off entirely?  Would one little taste have doomed the blow torch booby trap?  C’mon man, just shovel in one forkful.  Just one!  You need your energy.

Also, maybe Kevin would wave to Old Man Marley if he didn’t look like a deranged psychopath.  Maybe lose the beard and the coat.

But outside of those two minor objections, just a heck of a film.

And have yourself a Merry Little Christmas!

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Double Karens

This might start getting a little more difficult tomorrow, but it’s another gimme tonight, one more of our search term stalwarts, “rashida jones.”  And, in the spirit of the season, we’re going to give you a Rashida Jones Tuesday 2 for 1:

…as Karen on Freaks and Geeks

…and as Karen on The Office (and season appropriate!).

Merry Christmas, Rashida Jones!

In Memoriam (Sorta): Jen Carroll

Oh, Jen, you broke our heart.  Not because you were eliminated from Top Chef: All-Stars on just the second episode, but because of the way you went out: bitter, rude, disrespectful.  Now, Jen, don’t get us wrong, we love your feistiness, your spunk, your proclivity for profanity.  There’s very little we enjoy more than a tough broad.  And we were delighted that you returned for All-Stars with a renewed determination and confidence, after showing some mental weakness during your first go ’round in Vegas.  But Padma Lakshmi is in a Carl’s Jr. commercial, so when you’re in front of the judge’s table you better show her some respect.  Be a bitch, just be a classy bitch.  Like Jackie O.  Or Bea Arthur.

Jen, please pack your Crocs and go.

Looks like the path is even clearer for Professor Ricky Blaise.

Great News!

Ryan Reynolds is back on the market!

Not terribly surprising.  You could totally feel the tension between him and Scarlett Johansson here:

Maybe he’ll reconcile with Alanis.  That always seemed like a better match to us.  They can talk about being Canadian.  And about being on Nickelodeon shows as young teenagers.  And other topics reflective of a higher level of conversation in general, we’d imagine.

Good luck, Canucks!

UPDATE: US Weekly reports that Reynolds has been “seeking comfort” with an ex.  Now who could that be???

More Gigglefests on ‘Boomer & Carton’: Making Fun of Blind People!

WFAN’s morning show Boomer & Carton is becoming to the go-to place for miggles (man giggles).  Last week, Craig Carton spurred co-host Boomer Esiason to launch one of the all-time great spit-takes.  This morning, during a conversation with caller “Blind Mike,” Carton demonstrated his lack of experience with the physically handicapped, sending Boomer into another laughing fit.

(Apparently, Carton was not content letting Today have all the chuckles at someone else’s misfortune)

And the miggles didn’t stop there.  “Blind Mike” had called in as a contestant on Boomer & Carton’s weekly sports quiz “Do You Know More Sports Than…” in which they pit a male listener against an attractive local female, usually a waitress from LI or NJ (basically an excuse to bring in and ogle a pretty lady).  Carton, perhaps feeling guilty about his earlier remarks, immediately tossed a Mike a softball, and Boomer lost it once again.

Sadly, “Blind Mike” lost.  There is no justice in this world.

Oh, and speaking of David Paterson…

Scarlett Johansson Leaves for the Prom, Ends Up at ‘SNL’

Two weeks back we talked in-depth about Jon Hamm’s third hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live and how in the third go-round we often see a distinct sense of adventure, how the host is now comfortable with the cast, the cast is at ease with the host, they’re all on the same page and are willing to try something that might be hit or miss, but is often still entertaining in the attempt.  We also mentioned that this past weekend would be Scarlett Johansson’s third hosting turn, so it’d be interesting to see if she took the same kind of leap as Hamm, or if she settled into a more predictable role, functional, competent but not exceptionally ambitious or outrageous, more along the lines of Drew Barrymore’s SNL resume.  Well, it certainly  wasn’t the former, but not so much the latter either.  We’re kind of confused actually.  Cause, really, more than anything, it seemed like a showcase for Johansson’s hair, her sense of style, her brassy broad persona and her variations on NY-NJ accents.

Continue: Whose hair was Johansson ripping off? How many accents could she employ in one night? Where’s Ryan Reynolds?

ScarJo Goes for the ‘SNL’ Trifecta This Weekend

Don’t forget, Scarlett Johansson returns to Studio 8H for her third hosting turn this weekend.  Inevitably, there will be some variation on this sketch (but if Ryan Reynolds pops up again, we won’t complain):

Did you know that, according to IMDB, ScarJo’s first credited role was as Laura in the 1994 Elijah Wood “family film” North?  In his review of that movie, Roger Ebert said “I hated this movie. Hated, hated, hated, hated, hated this movie. Hated it. Hated every simpering stupid vacant audience-insulting moment of it. Hated the sensibility that thought anyone would like it. Hated the implied insult to the audience by its belief that anyone would be entertained by it,” and then later on Siskel & Ebert remarked, “I hate this movie as much as any movie we’ve ever reviewed on the 19 years we’ve been doing this show.”  So, you know, check your local listings!
