Happy Canada Day From Your Favorite “Teen”

Celebrate Canada Day the right way, with our neighbor to the north’s greatest teen soap opera. No, no, not Degrassi, but Fifteen. It was the show that didn’t make you think “Hmm, one day that Billy kid is going to be a star and also super good-looking,” but twenty years later Ryan Reynolds is just that (well, maybe just the latter, depending on how RIPD performs), and Fifteen remains the gold standard of Canadian melodramas in which teenagers have conversations as if they were bitter, sad, empty thirty-year-olds.

Time to Time Tunnel: A Jumped the Snark Family Tradition

Well, even without the unfortunate connection between the Adventures of Pete & Pete theme song and the once-in-several-lifetimes hurricane that caused so much damage and heartache, the redhead brothers from Wellsville would still be dominating this late October-early November stretch. First, there was “Halloweenie” and, now, we’re once again ready to jump back through the Time Tunnel. Truly, one of our nation’s greatest holidays, and one of our country’s all-time great television shows.

As always, be sure to stock up on your riboflavin. And be safe out there.

T-minus: 35 minutes

A Newsroom A Day: Hey (and Goodbye) Sandy

We think it’s fair to say that Hurricane Sandy was deranged (happily deranged? that’s debatable), and while we regret the target that she chose – one so close to home – we’re happy that the worst is over and we’re now into the recovery and rebuilding process. It’s not entirely fair to blame the theme song to The Adventures of Pete & Pete for all this death and destruction and general disturbance  but Polaris always seemed kind of bizarre, and “Hey Sandy” always seemed kinda mysterious, something about it that we couldn’t trust. With that in mind, we have today’s A Newsroom A Day, and with it, hopefully, we say “Later, Sandy.”

Don’t you talk back.

We Finally Weigh-In On the Anthony Weiner Scandal

Well, sorta.  We’re pretty sure that Anthony Weiner and Marc Weiner are different people, but if Tony is half as creepy and unsettling as Marc, then he’s definitely guilty of a sending a cross-country junk text.

HOW DID THIS NOT GIVE EVERYONE EVER NIGHTMARES?

Still hard to believe that Weinerville was a show that aired on Nickelodeon afternoons and not, in fact, an orgy-filled porn.

A New Year, A New Milestone, A New Goal, and Truffaut

Good 2011, guys!  Thanks for coming back.

Before we jump right back into the swing of things (with, no doubt, our most successful year yet), we just wanted to take a second to take the temperature of this blog, see where we’ve been, where we are, and where we’re going.

In early 2010 we set the goal of 365 posts in 365 days.  Well…that didn’t happen.  But the benefit of setting the bar high is that even when you fail, you can still be proud of what you’ve accomplished.  And we are proud of our 2010, drafting 260 new posts (so, if you average that out, we posted just about once per weekday, which is a decent pace.  Good job, us!).  Even more impressive, and reassuring, is that in the last four months, when we were finally able to spend more time with this blog, we uploaded about 180 posts.  And that was with the holidays and a week vacation (and a blizzard).  So, if we can keep that up, 365 in 365 should be a reality in 2011.  Unless we get drafted.

In addition to an encouraging 2010, we’re happy to announce that we’ve made it to 400 posts!  After a really slow start, we sprinted from 300 to 400 in just a matter of months.  At that clip, 500 will not be far behind.  And you can expect that celebration to be a BLOW OUT.

And what else can you expect in 2011?  Well, we need to do more than just meet our personal challenge from last year.  First off, we hope to eclipse our single busiest day, which actually happened a year ago this Thursday (apparently people really wanted to read about The State that day).  Secondly, we hope to get the Jumped the Snark name out on other sites, a mission we’ve already begun with our recent Tony Danza piece.  And, thirdly, we hope to roll out a series of new weekly and semi-regular features like “Classic Survivor Clip” and “Reginald VelJohnson in a Uniform.”  We have a lot of ideas, a lot of ambition, and a lot of free time.  Let’s make 2011 the year that Jumped the Snark FINALLY overtakes Facebook.

In honor of reaching 400 posts, please enjoy a clip from Francios Traffaut’s coming-of-age classic The 400 Blows:

Jumped the Snark: the only place where you’ll find French New Wave Cinema AND 90s-era Nickelodeon.

Even Better News!

Just discovered that Season 1 of Fifteen is available on iTunes (and has been for some time, apparently)!

Expect a Jumped the Snark Nostalgia Corner look back to come your way soon.

Guys, High School is hard.

Great News!

Ryan Reynolds is back on the market!

Not terribly surprising.  You could totally feel the tension between him and Scarlett Johansson here:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Maybe he’ll reconcile with Alanis.  That always seemed like a better match to us.  They can talk about being Canadian.  And about being on Nickelodeon shows as young teenagers.  And other topics reflective of a higher level of conversation in general, we’d imagine.

Good luck, Canucks!

UPDATE: US Weekly reports that Reynolds has been “seeking comfort” with an ex.  Now who could that be???
