We Found Casey Wilson!
Earlier today we noted that Tony Danza has transitioned from reality TV star to web comedy personality. And now we know what a sketch comedian does after being let go from SNL. They turn to recurring roles on hackneyed cable sitcoms! Because you can now find Casey Wilson on TV Land’s newest clearly targeted at older viewers show, Retired at 35. Here she is as Amy, George Segal and Jessica Walter’s unappreciated, romantically challenged daughter:
Well, at least she’s finally getting laughs, even if they’re added in post.
Later we find out that her totally real boyfriend is totally gay because he likes to cook and wears pink. We guess if the show is going to specifically try to appeal to older viewers they might as well use twenty-year old jokes. Way to not even try, Retired at 35!
Seriously, in a post for another day, is this an obscene use of the laugh track? Or is the device just so foreign to us now?

Happy MLK Day!
Did you see SNL this past weekend? It included a sketch starring Kenan Thompson and Jay Pharoah (more on both of those later). Remember the last time two black guys had more than one line in a sketch? Well, here it is:
Vodpod videos no longer available.(we love how Horatio Sanz can’t even deliver three lines with a straight face. Come back Horatio! And bring the 80lbs you lost!)
By the way, what is up with Topher Grace?

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Oedipal Complex
We expect to often see search terms like “justin bieber” and “miranda cosgrove,” and to a lesser, but more encouraging, extent “rashida jones” and “tom westman,” but it surprised us how often one of our top results has been “nasim pedrad,” the talented and pretty comedian now in her sophomore season on SNL. Not that we think that she doesn’t warrant that kind of attention, but it’s intriguing that web surfers have taken a particular interest in Pedrad, considering that SNL has no shortage of attractive and funny female cast members (Kristen Wiig, Abby Elliott, Vanessa Bayer, Jenny Slate until this season). Then again, it’s not terribly shocking, as Pedrad has continued to impress us with her diversity and poise, deftly portraying women like Kim Kardashian, Azam Farahi (aka Mrs. Ahmadinejad) and Cristiane Amanpour, as well as performing Lil Blaster in the Underground Records commercials.
Pedrad has also fallen into the unfortunate pattern of playing hyperactive, loquacious, often male, teenagers, which has been the only knock against her so far. However, despite that, our favorite performance from Pedrad was as wise beyond her years teenager Bedilia, a confident young lady who exhibits just a little too much appreciation for her parents.
Vodpod videos no longer available.See? She more than holds her own against Alec Baldwin there. If Pedrad can excise those other, more annoying, less successful characters then we see no reason why she won’t be one of our most popular search terms for years to come.
Reminder: Gwyneth Paltrow & Cee-Lo on ‘SNL’ Tomorrow Night!
Get excited for Cee Lo!
Or whatever.
And remember, Gwyneth, wipe down your legs BEFORE the monologue.

Just Because: Robot Repair
Somehow, despite committing our life’s work to documenting and analyzing SNL, we had never seen this phenomenal sketch before. But better late than never.
Vodpod videos no longer available. If you were wondering what kind of sketch we absolutely love, you now have your answer.
(also, do you think today’s date, 1.11.11, will overwhelm robots’ circuits?)

Jim Carrey, ‘SNL’: No One Does a Thicke!
Well, we weren’t devastated. Maybe it was because we were still ecstatic from the Jets victory, and that residual giddiness made us a little more lenient, a little looser (the beers couldn’t have hurt either). Whatever it was, we were in a good mood, and Jim Carrey’s return to SNL didn’t ruin it. It wasn’t a landmark episode, or a groundbreaking night, nor did they seem that they were fully back from vacation. But, given our lofty, unrealistic, expectations, it was satisfying. And (unfortunately), that’s enough.
And let’s, for a change, start at the top. We often completely ignore the cold open when reviewing SNL, because it’s usually one of the weakest, least memorable parts of the show, certainly in non-election years. We can’t pinpoint when it started exactly, but perhaps it’s been since the great Bush-Gore battle of 2000 that the cold open has almost felt obligated to be political sketch. Often times that’s made for great, funny television (Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, occasionally Jason Sudeikis as Joe Biden), but more often than not we’re treated to a mildly amusing address from by Fred Armisen as President Obama. It’s become predictable and somewhat boring. So what a surprise it was for the show to begin and discover Armisen not as Obama but as NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Keep reading! More on Bloomy, Carrey nails Kunis, and a sketch made just for us…
Carrey On, Jimmy
In a little over 24 hours from now Jim Carrey will return to SNL for the first time since 1996, and there’s absolutely no way its going to satisfy our expectations. We’ve already made the fatal mistake of building it up in our heads, so there’s no way it’s not going to be a colossal disappointment. Nevertheless, we’re excited!
And while Carrey was inside 30 Rock he stopped over at Late Night to chat with another Jim. Behold, Carrey on Fallon:
Vodpod videos no longer available.Wow, lots of energy from Carrey. Makes us wonder if he’s been riding the snake. Sure would help with the weight loss.
See you soon, Jim! Hope you’re ready to shatter our dreams!
