The Day Has Come: The ‘Saved by the Bell’ Marathon Starts Now

The snow is falling outside and we don’t have any plans til Friday night (maybe), so we’ve decided it’s finally time for the Saved by the Bell marathon, something we’ve been planning to do for years.  The day has arrived.

For obvious reasons we’re excluding Good Morning, Miss Bliss, The College Years, and The New Class.  But that still leaves us with 86 episodes, which works out to about 32 hours of Bayside.  We’ve gotten our coffee, picked up some soda, have a couple of bags of Hot Buffalo Wing Pretzel Pieces at the ready, and a half-gallon of Trader Joe’s Coffee Bean Blast ice cream in the freezer.  We’re not sure what will come of this, but check back here for some live blogging and keep an eye on our Twitter for random insights and observations.  And then, hopefully, when all is done we’ll have some kind of thesis, the definitive Saved by the Bell dissertation.

Zack Morris, I’m coming for all your giant cell phones.

Cabin Fever

We’re snowed in on Long Island and going rather stir crazy.  This would have been the perfect opportunity for our long-gestating Saved by the Bell marathon, but, unfortunately, we recently brought all five seasons back to Brooklyn for that very occasion.  It’s like Gift of the Magi, but with Screech instead of a comb.

So hopefully we’ll take this predicament as an opportunity to write, reflect, and ponder the nature of man.  In other words, let’s turn snow into snowade.  And thanks to our mother’s refusal to pass up a discount and our father’s love of soup, we have enough provisions to last through another dozen Snowreckonings.  Certainly, we feel more prepared than Kip & Henry.

[Part 2]

While we tend to side with their conclusion about the nature of man, Community might disagree.  What do you think?

YOU DECIDE.

Is it Wrong to Want More Paul Rudd Than Paul McCartney? Also, a Look Back at the Last Three SNLs

Okay, let’s get this thing going right away. Here are the highlights from this weekend’s SNL hosted by Paul Rudd:

And that’s it for the highlights.

We’re Not Too Old to Laugh at the Word “Chub”

We caught this clip from The Talk while waiting on line at the bank last week.  Sometimes the good stuff just finds you (around the 30-second mark):

Also, BIG TIP: buying pretzels in bulk is cheaper.  Mind.  Blown.

You know what would be terrible?  Being the kids in America’s Cheapest Family.  Misery.

Sidenote: do you think that 20 years ago it was Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini‘s goal to one day co-host a mid-morning all-female talk show?

Johnny Depp:  I want to be the biggest movie star in the world one day, while keeping my integrity intact and cultivating my own personal style.  What about you, Holls?

Holly Robinson Peete: I’d like to ask someone the best way to buy bananas.

OR:

Mario Lopez:  Someday I’m going to be one of the hardest working men in Hollywood, hosting a dance show on MTV, a syndicated celebrity news magazine, as well as the occasional beauty pageant.  After I star in a Greg Louganis biopic, of course.  How about your Mark?

Mark-Paul Gosselaar:  Oh, well, I’ll take a brief respite after this, then work on a string of shows with acclaimed TV vets Stephen Bocco and David Milch, grow my hair long again, cut it, and then do a sex scene with Mary-Louise Parker.  Pretty standard stuff.  What about you, Leah?  When this whole Malibu Sands storyline wraps up, what do you want to do?

Leah Remini:  It’d be great to do a show where I’m married to a fat guy.  I think the hot wife-overweight slob husband dynamic is totally unexplored territory.  Then, after that, something about perfume.

Dreams do come true.

‘Survivor: Nicaragua’ – Utter Stupidity

Maybe we were spoiled by the last season of All-Stars. Not just that it offered unmatched drama, familiar characters, surprise twists, but also that those guys knew how to play the game. Granted, that’s a benefit of playing the game for the second, and in some cases, third time, and there were still plenty of dummies out there (Tyson and JT committing two of the all-time unforgivable blunders in Survivor history), but the people running the game, at the top of the food chain – Russell, Parvati, Boston Rob, even Rupert – did so with intelligence and cunning. It truly was a game managed by all-stars. Heck, even Sandra knew how to play game.  And she also knew to save the vindictive vandalism for the last day, and when Russell steals other player’s shoes he doesn’t tearfully confess an hour later (lessons to be learned, NaOnka, Holly). But over here on Nicaragua, even though there are clearly leaders on each tribe, they’re not nearly as crafty and clever as they think they are. And, now, you can’t even blame it on youth, because Marty, self-proclaimed master of the game, is racking up the mistakes along with the kids. Who among the tribes is truly grasping this game, making smart, logical moves, not just tricky, creative ones? Right now, it’s hard to say.

More: Hey, Marty, stop listening to your gut! And we say goodbye to Jill the proper way. Plus: Let’s milk some milk!

Separated At Birth: ‘American Idol’ Edition

Is Adam Lambert the brunette version of fantasy post-Zack Attack Zack Morris?

Also, Tim Urban, you’re totally stealing Chris Lowell’s act.

Veronica can’t be happy about Tim Urban ripping off Piz.  If there’s one person you don’t want to piss off it’s Veronica Mars.

Drums, Conga & Guitar, Uncle Jesse? Have Mercy!

Just to tie a bow on yesterday’s John Stamos-Beach Boys-DWTS post, here’s last night’s surf rock medley, with Stamos performing not one, not two, but three instruments, and looking, in the words of my mother, adorable: [via Gawker.TV]

Could this be a storyline for that long-awaited Full House reunion?  Uncle Jesse goes on tour with his teen heartthrob twin sons Nicky and Alex?  But the show is cut short when niece Stephanie goes into labor?  How rude!  Younger sister Michelle shows up at the hospital just in time, barreling into the waiting room exclaiming “I’m coming, I’m coming, I’m coming.  I’m here!”?  You got it, dude!

Also Gawker.TV did what I couldn’t do and found the classic clip of the Tanner clan joining The Beach Boys on stage for “Barbara Ann.”  I hang my blog in shame.

And so ends the Full House portion of our week.  Or does it?

Four More Examples of How Jimmy Fallon is Killing it (and One That Shows Why He’s Not)

Talking up the good work that Jimmy Fallon and the Late Night crew have been doing is nothing new on this blog.  In fact, we’ve been complimenting their efforts as far back as last Fall.  But with the show celebrating its one year anniversary last week, and with the program demonstrating as much creativity and spontaneity as any show in late night today (effectively filling the absurdity vacuum left by Conan), we thought it fitting to highlight some recent clips to show how Jimmy continues to impress (and then one more to illustrate how in other respects he continues to disappoint).

Late Night has particularly excelled in slickly produced, exceptionally accurate television parodies, first with the Hills spoof 7th Floor West and then with The Real Housewives of Late Night.  The show has continued this hot streak by taking on the height of the pop culture phenomena, Lost, with their new recurring series, Late. Below is the 2nd episode, as the castaways (brought together by an elevator crash and now stranded on a creepy abandoned office floor) struggle to make sense of their new and mysterious surroundings.
