Muppet Monday Continues into Tuesday! Jim Henson: The Movie?

(and, yes, I realize that it is now Wednesday on the East Coast.  Deal with it.)

Doesn’t it just keep getting better and better for the Muppets?  If not for Bronson Pinchot, I’d say they were having the comeback of the year (but maybe they take the crown for best comeback of the last two months).

“Hollywood” released its annual “Black List,” the list of the top ten “favorite” unproduced screenplays.  #1?  The Muppet Man, a biopic of Muppets creator Jim Henson.  Described as “Man on the Moon, but with puppets,” it sounds quite intriguing, and as it’s set up at the Jim Henson Company, we know that it will be a faithful and fitting tribute to Henson’s life (good thing they didn’t sell the rights to Henson’s life story to Disney; we wouldn’t want a glossy Mickey Mouse version).  Even though the list isn’t exactly a “best of,” let’s hope the script is fast-tracked and the film is in theaters soon.  Seems like the perfect time.

And who to play Jim Henson?  Well, Man on the Moon star Jim Carrey seems like a possibility, based on his experience with biopics, but mostly on his grizzly beard (not to mention that Henson and Carrey share a first name!).  Or maybe James Cameron is interested in getting in to the acting game, at least before starting on the Avatar sequels (and they also share a first name!!).

No word on who would play the Swedish Chef.  But I am available.

Hanukkah Muppet Monday: The Secret Connection Between ‘Growing Pains’ & ‘Sesame Street’

You didn’t think I’d let a Muppet Monday falling on Hanukkah pass by without posting some sort of hilarious video or funny picture or insightful essay relevant to both the Muppets and Hanukkah, did you? Well, it’s Tuesday now, so I guess you were sorta right.  But, still, a little faith would be nice.

I stumbled upon this video that combines perhaps the two things that I love most in this world: The Muppets and Growing Pains.  This video features Jeremy Miller (aka Ben Seaver, aka the cute kid who grew into an awkward bespectacled teen and was quickly supplemented (supplanted) by a young Leonardo DiCaprio) visiting the Jewish version of Sesame Street, Shalom Sesame, and hosting a Hanukkah inspired game show spoof entitled “Dreidel of Fortune.”  Watch and…well, watch.

I guess this means that Jeremy Miller is Jewish too.  Not nearly as exciting as the same news about Alison Brie.

SNL: Blake is Lively, Astronaut ‘Tater Chips, and the Muppets are Just Killing it Lately!

Recently it has felt like that upon finishing the weekly installment of Saturday Night Live there’s a sense of emptiness.  I know I watched an hour and a half of television, but why do I feel so unfulfilled?  If a sketch comedy show is broadcast and it’s not funny does it really happen?  Well, this season the show has managed to create buzz despite a dearth of good sketches; so far we’ve learned that if the host is a trainwreck (January Jones) or possessed by flubber (Regular Joe Gordon Levitt) then the show can make waves without being funny.  Then what’s the takeaway from this latest Blake Lively hosted edition?  It’s certainly not of comic triumph (many reviewers are still citing the Taylor Swift episode for this type of euphoria, although I think that entry fell short as well).  No, it just feels like another 90 minutes of sketches, monologue, musical performances and commercials (both genuine and of the parody variety) that went by mostly unremarkably.  However, like any episode, good or bad, funny or offensive (usually the latter of both those comparisons), there are a couple moments worth noting.  Let’s start at the top and then we’ll move directly to the bottom.

More: Electric Mayhem, Me as the Swedish Chef, Forte’s forte and lady bowlers!

Friday Muppet Video! Kermit is Not a Whore!

Is this a tradition?!?

As I’ve previously mentioned, I normally will not tolerate any kind of Muppet mockery (stoned Kermit, for example).  However, this protection over the brand also extends to employ of the actual Muppets themselves.  It’s been almost 20 years since Jim Henson left us prematurely, and then ownership of our puppet friends has changed hands twice, first to a German company and then finally to Disney, so there’s cause for concern that the Muppets might be whored out for commercials not worthy of the Muppet name (and, no, I am not including the Pizza Hut spots.  Those combine two things I love), or forced into new, edgy personas in an attempt to be more relevant; less Sesame Street and more Triumph the Insult Comic Dog.  It was then with great trepidation that I watched a video posted by Gawker TV entitled, “Kermit is a Giant Slut on the Today Show.”

Fortunately, it was not as bad as the title indicated.  The “lewd pop-culture reference” teased by Gawker seemed to me more like just a pop-culture reference, perhaps a biting one, kicking a tiger while he’s down, but not quite lewd.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

In fact, I kind of prefer this segment to an earlier one in the show when Ms. Piggy made a rather obvious (and perhaps cruder) Swine Flu quip.

I’ll take relevant feline humor over lame porcine jokes any day of the week.

Good work, Muppets!  Way to not debase yourselves to meet the normal Today Show level of discourse.

Black Friday Fun! Muppetstar Galactica!

So much fun showing up at Best Buy at 5am this morning.  Black Friday is the best!  It’s like Christmas, but instead of receiving presents you have to get up before dawn to literally wrestle with other people to buy gifts.  America!

Anyway, with the Muppet version of “Bohemian Rhapsody” burning up the bandwidths since Tuesday, we thought it’d be appropriate to end the week with another (albeit fan created) Muppet mash-up.  Enjoy!

P.S. The diet starts today, right guys?!?!

Was Hoping This Would Also Be a ‘Wayne’s World’ Parody

But it’s still good.

Twitter is all abuzz with Retweets about a new Muppet video uploaded to YouTube today in which our favorites perform their very own version of Queen’s classic “Bohemian Rhapsody” music video!

Pretty amusing, but how cool would it have been if it featured Kermit and Fozzie in the Mirth Mobile, head banging and lip syncing along, Fozzie in the Dana Carvey/Garth role behind the wheel and not knowing the words.  Oh, well, I guess it would have looked like this, but with “Bohemian Rhapsody.”  And maybe Animal going crazy in the backseat.

Got to admit it though, the Muppets sure look good in 1080p.

Sesame Street Socialism

Normally I will not stand for any kind of besmirching of the Muppet or Sesame Street legacy.  They’ve done far too much good and earned too much respect to be the target of an easy joke (I feel the same way about Billy Joel, incidentally another big influence during my youth).  However, with the 40th Anniversary of Sesame Street upon us, they had some fun with our (apparently left-wing) furry friends on The Colbert Report.  Of course, their in-depth knowledge of the show and its characters shows true admiration and reverence, and clearly only devoted fans would be able to develop an argument for Grover as a proponent of same-sex marriage (however, I think the jury is still out on Bert & Ernie.  Just because they lived together, sleeping in the same room all these years doesn’t mean they’re gay.  I mean, do you know how much it costs to rent on Sesame Street?  It’s pure economics.  Also, Kip and Henry shared a room and no one said they were gay.  And they were cross-dressers to boot).

Vodpod videos no longer available.

And while we’re talking about Sesame Street, check out our friend Kieran Walsh’s thoughts on 40 years of Big Bird, Cookie Monster and the gang.
