Jump the Snark Turns Three!

Last Friday was Jumped the Snark’s THIRD(!) birthday, and we celebrated in style, with a night out at our most favorite restaurant.

When we stirred late Saturday morning (okay, fine, early Saturday afternoon), after clearing the cobwebs from our head, and wiping the Cool Ranch Doritos crumbs off our face, we tried to remember what happened the night before.  But after the hazy memories of chicken finger baskets and teriyaki flavor bowls and mudslides and oreo brownie sundaes and Killian’s Red slowly came into focus, we thought about the last three years of this blog, and how grateful we feel that we’ve been able to provide you, the reader at home, with our dumb posts and unnecessary commentary and our eerie fixation with TGIF.  But you’ve stood by us, and we thank you (and, yes, we’re talking to one person, which is essentially our readership).

And as we typically like to do on any landmark day here at Jumped the Snark, let’s take a moment and look back at the past three years, and reveal our #post of all-time, with 8,798 views:

It’s our home page!   Yay!
Alright, fine, that’s not very exciting.  In fact, it’s devoid of any excitement of all.  But the important thing is that 8,798 times, whether by accident or by design (and, let’s be honest, mostly by accident), world-wide web surfers landed on this site,  for two seconds or for two hours.  Did they stay on long enough to read any posts?  Will anyone read this post?  Probably not?  But if we can waste someone’s time for just a few seconds, and maybe provide some genuine frustration or disappointment, well, then it’s all been worth it.
Happy Birthday, Everyone.

Happy 2nd Birthday to Us!

It feels like it was just twenty-four short months ago that we launched this blog, but it’s actually been two full years.  Can you believe it?  When we started this thing, selling our comic book collection, maxing out our credit cards, and practically begging for help from all our friends at the convenience store, we were just hoping to break even.  Post a few Office commentaries, make our buddies laugh, maybe get a few dozen page views and call it a day.  Little did we know that years later we’d still be here, attracting 3,000 readers a day*.  We’ve come a long way, baby.

So, in honor of our 2nd birthday, we thought we’d look back at some of our favorite Jumped the Snark banners, a little walk down JtS memory lane.

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: You’ve Got Jumped the Snark

The bulk of our daily search terms continue to be Survivor: Redemption Island related – Phillip, Survivor Phillip, Former Federal Agent Phillip, Kristina boobs – so we’re going to work with the odd man out in the group, “jumped the snark.”  And we’ve previously established that when our search term is “jumped the snark” it’s a wild-card day, we can post anything our little R2D2 Mr. Potato Head heart desires.  And our little R2D2 Mr. Potato Head once again desires to honor the work of Judd Apatow.

This past weekend brought us the long-awaited Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared reunions at Los Angeles’ Paley Center (which you can read much more about here).  It’s truly amazing to see these kids grown up, truly amazing that they’ve almost all gone on to successful careers as adults, and perhaps most truly amazing of all is that none of them have developed a serious drug problem (excluding an apparent affinity for the wacky tobaccky).  We frequently mention Freaks and Geeks on this blog, so we’re going to shine the spotlight on Undeclared this time around.

Here’s a clip from the series’ third episode, “Eric Visits,” which contains probably our favorite Undeclared exchange.  At about the 30 second mark please enjoy Seth Rogen’s thoughts on a certain Tom Hanks romantic comedy.

We feel the same way.

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Etymology

There were no new relevant search terms today, but instead of just giving you another Tom Westman or Rashida Jones clip (which we’ll do plenty of, trust us) we’re going to do something a little different.  Some of you out there have been using the search term “jumped the snark,” (listen, guys, the site is just jumpedthesnark.com, no tricks.  You don’t need to work that hard to find us), so we’ll reciprocate with something based on that.  However, we’re not going to self-promote and just link to one of our old posts (or, god forbid, show you our face), but, alternatively, we’re going to offer a little TV history  lesson.  In case you didn’t know, the name “Jumped the Snark” is derived from the term “jumped the shark” which is colloquially used to describe a TV show that has moved its plot in an unrealistic, absurd or hackneyed direction, often with the introduction of a new character or some sort of stunt episode, signaling that the show’s best days are behind it.  “Jumped the shark,” in turn, is derived from a Season 5 episode of Happy Days in which Fonzie literally jumps a shark.  But let’s hear about the origins of the term from the writer of the episode in question, Jeff Breederman:

Fascinating stuff.

And, for good measure, here’s the Fonz:

Quiz on Monday.

Wednesday Nostalgia Corner: Jumped The Snark

Hey, remember this classic blog post?  One year ago today!

The Judd Apatow Effect! Finally Complete!

Many years ago I started plotting the connections between Judd Apatow, his frequent collaborators, and emerging comic talents.  Well, I talked about that chart for a while, and never really did anything about it.  However, after getting laid off I decided it was time to do it.  And I’m happy to say it’s finally ready!  Check out the thumbnails below and read more about it on the Judd Apatow Effect page.   With several films featuring actors and directors from the Apatow family tree released in the last few weeks, ( I Love You, Man, Adventureland, and Observe and Report), the time seems right to look at the scope of his reach and his effect on modern comedy.

Please take a look and let me know if you have any thoughts, comments or suggestions.  Also, don’t hesitate to relate any errors or omissions.  It’s still a work in progress, and I plan to keep updating it.  I already have a list of actors and projects to be added to the Third Level, and it doesn’t look like the Apatow factory is going to slow anytime soon, so keep checking back.

See you later, Joben!
