Kieran’s Mom’s Korner: Kieran’s Mom Weighs-In on the Rise and Fall of ‘SNL’

Yesterday we posted a new ‘Kieran’s Korner’ with Kieran’s thoughts on the recent ‘SNL’ hosted by Dana Carvey.  We figured we’d get some real wisdom, some genuine perspective.  And we did.  But now we have a special treat, some observations about the show from an even wiser, more experienced source.  Ladies and gentlemen, we’re proud to present the first (and hopefully not last) ‘Kieran’s Mom’s Korner’:

I have some thoughts on SNL.  I think it took a wrong turn when they changed the closing music from something with lots of saxophones to something lighter.

Also, I never liked that sketch with “I hate when that happens.”
But some of the early stuff with Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner and even Chevy Chase was brilliant.

Love,
Mum

Well it seems that Carvey got at least one thing right last week: everyone does have their own favorite cast.

Did ‘The King’s Speech’ Poster Rip-Off Mirah’s ‘You Think It’s Like This But Really It’s Like This’ Cover Art?

Here’s the poster for Best Picture front-runner The King’s Speech:

And here’s the cover art for Mirah’s 2000 album You Think It’s Like This But Really It’s Like This:

Makes you think, right?

Probably just a coincidence.

But just for fun:

Or:

Hmmmmmm….

Groundhog Day Just Because

We never get tired of this.  EVER.

If you had only one day to live over and over again, what would YOU do?

There is a larger, deeper post somewhere in here about the existential subtext to Groundhog Day, but we have to get back to Saved by the Bell.  Maybe next year!

C’mon, That’s a Joke, Right?

Doris Day?  You can’t be serious, Doris Day.

Well, it’s better than naming your daughter “Rock Hudson.”

But we’re surprised Ms. Day appeared on The View, and not The [Pillow] Talk.

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: A Heroes Welcome

We’re going to cheat a little tonight.  Our search term for this post is “tom westman heroes,” but, as much as we absolutely adore Lt. Tom Westman, we’ve already welcome him twice to this daily feature.  And, more importantly, there’s bigger Survivor matters at hand right now.  So we’re going to use that search term as an excuse to bring you this, the first official Boston Rob/Russell promo for Redemption Island:

“I’m going to need a bigger torch” = AMAZING.  Bring it, Probst!

Can.  Not.  Wait.

(Also, quick thought: Are Russell and Boston Rob really Jacob and the Man in Black?  Think about it)

Second(!) Danza Moment of the Week: Danza for Hire

Normally we like to limit our Danza Moment of the Week posts to one per week (which is why we don’t call it the “Danza Moment of the Bi-Week”), but we thought it was prudent we got this one right out there (and maybe take next week off.  Jk!).

Well, apparently the logical next step after teaching Of Mice and Men to fifteen year-olds is to appear in a web video that discusses both horse and orangutan fucking, because that’s exactly where Tony Danza has gone after leaving Northeast High School.  Apparently the stress of teaching was too much, perhaps turning Tony from the earnest, affable idealist we knew and loved into a more cynical, jaded celeb, preferring to pal around with Michael Cera and Martin Starr than headline another school fundraiser.  Which isn’t to say that we’re complaining, or criticizing Danza, but between this new Funny or Die video and yesterday’s clips from Scott and Zander’s Crazy Night, it seems like he’s trying to reinvent himself as a viral video foil, poking fun at his image the way that James Van Der Beek and Rob Lowe have done in the last two weeks.

So here you are, Internet, your newest web comedy sensation, Tony Danza:

Sidenote:  It’s great to see Michael Cera and Martin Starr, stars of two of the greatest TV shows in the history of television, working together.  Did we just catch a glimpse into Superbad 2: College Party???

Sidenote 2: Do you think Danza’s recent return to the zeitgeist is wholly or just partially attributable to Jumped the Snark?  Something to think about.

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Oedipal Complex

We expect to often see search terms like “justin bieber” and “miranda cosgrove,” and to a lesser, but more encouraging, extent “rashida jones” and “tom westman,” but it surprised us how often one of our top results has been “nasim pedrad,” the talented and pretty comedian now in her sophomore season on SNL.  Not that we think that she doesn’t warrant that kind of attention, but it’s intriguing that web surfers have taken a particular interest in Pedrad, considering that SNL has no shortage of attractive and funny female cast members (Kristen Wiig, Abby Elliott, Vanessa Bayer, Jenny Slate until this season).  Then again, it’s not terribly shocking, as Pedrad has continued to impress us with her diversity and poise, deftly portraying women like Kim Kardashian, Azam Farahi (aka Mrs. Ahmadinejad) and Cristiane Amanpour, as well as performing Lil Blaster in the Underground Records commercials.

Pedrad has also fallen into the unfortunate pattern of playing hyperactive, loquacious, often male, teenagers, which has been the only knock against her so far.  However, despite that, our favorite performance from Pedrad was as wise beyond her years teenager Bedilia, a confident young lady who exhibits just a little too much appreciation for her parents.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

See?  She more than holds her own against Alec Baldwin there.  If Pedrad can excise those other, more annoying, less successful characters then we see no reason why she won’t be one of our most popular search terms for years to come.

And Speaking of Brooklyn and Snow, It’s the Danza Moment(s) of the Week!

Keeping with today’s Brooklyn theme (not to be confused with today’s ripping people off theme, or today’s “and speaking of” theme, or yesterday’s robot theme), check out the first few minutes of the Who’s the Boss? pilot, as Tony and Samantha pack up his windowless child molester van old, beat-up blue van and depart the Universal Studios backlot Brooklyn.  As a bonus, we’ve included the original opening credits, which feature additional footage of the iconic van’s journey to the Bower home in Connecticut (no footage of the cast?  How bold!  Perhaps, an homage to the Taxi opening?)

Vodpod videos no longer available.

In addition, keeping with today’s snow theme, here’s a short clip of Danza from Taxi that can serve as your go-to video the next time a blizzard rolls through:

And speaking of ripping people off, was this Taxi clip perhaps the inspiration for the Bosom Buddies cabin episode?  Makes you think.

Just Because: Robot Repair

Somehow, despite committing our life’s work to documenting and analyzing SNL, we had never seen this phenomenal sketch before.  But better late than never.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

If you were wondering what kind of sketch we absolutely love, you now have your answer.

(also, do you think today’s date, 1.11.11, will overwhelm robots’ circuits?)

Wait, So How Much is a Full-Price Pair of Bonobos?

If we’re getting $50 off our first pair of Bonobos (great name, guys), then we have to imagine that the final cost would be “they owe us $10,” right?  Seriously, how expensive could a pair of pants called “Bonobos” be?

Well, then again, they were named “Best Men’s Pants” by NY Magazine, so we’re sure they’re totally worth it.
