Chuck Scarborough Prevents an Uprising: Sue Simmons Groundhog Impression 2011!

Sue seemed a little reluctant to unveil her 2011 Groundhog impression last night, perhaps aware of the phenomenon her yearly tradition has become thanks to YouTube, but Chuck rightly surmised that if Sue didn’t look into the camera and crinkle her nose they’d have a viewer revolt on their hands, a bloody coup.  And Sue recognized the importance of her signature impersonation, understanding that with all the terrible things going on in the world – the flailing economy, the incessant snow, the turmoil in Egypt, The Jersey Shore – we need this.  With great groundhog impression power comes great groundhog impression responsibility.  And, as usual, Sue did not disappoint:

And then Chuck was right again: you can find that on YouTube!  Never change guys, never change.

Sudeikis Week Continues: Silence Your Falcons

Between Seasons 1 and 2 of Saved by the Bell, here’s a quick one just to keep Jason Sukeikis week going.

Easily the best four seconds from this whole episode:

Hanks, Hanks, a Million Times Hanks

We only caught about 1/3 of the Golden Globes last night (which, judging from what we saw, might have been 1/6 too much), but we were fortunate enough to catch the requisite Tom Hanks appearance.  And, even if we had seen the whole show, we’re certain that Hanks’ minute and a half on-screen was the highlight, as he brought more energy and laughter in his 90 seconds than the whole show did in 6 hours (or whatever).  And he did it all without a Mel Gibson joke!  The guy is just good.  Really good.  And we love and appreciate him more every time.

Now if we could just get Peter Scolari up there with him next year.

Hanx!

And Speaking of Williamsburg, Today is 1.12.11 (Williams’ Burg?)

Which is the zip code for the Brooklyn neighborhood, the snow-covered part of the borough where Jumped the Snark operates from (thanks to comic genius Mike Still for pointing this out).  The area is much maligned for its preponderance of hipsters, but, let’s face it, it offers better bars and better restaurants and better coffee and better pizza than everywhere else.  If you don’t live here (or in the 11222), you’re probably just jealous (plus it offers easy access to the Long Island Expressway without having to live in Queens).

In honor of this once in a century occasion, we could have gone with the Hipster Olympics, shot all around 11211, most notably in its McCarren Park, but let’s mark this momentous day with something a little more recent, a little less anti-hipster.  We’re speaking, of course, of Brian Williams’ story of the year, a brilliant monologue we’re sure you have seen (we hope!), but absolutely adore.  Williams doesn’t name the neighborhood specifically, only utilizing the borough-general term “Brooklyn,” but when he mentions ironic glassframes and artisanal cheeses, you know he’s really talking about Williamsburg.

Need more Williamsburg related content?  Here’s a scene from Delocated shot inside Bedford Ave’s Spacecraft.

Make sure to celebrate with some small batch coffee and locally sourced meats!

Gratuitious Search Term Bait of the Day: Christmas in January

Very, very, excited about today’s entry.  Many thanks to whomever searched for today’s term, because it’s allowed us to post one of our favorite scenes from Community, and also one of our favorite scenes from anything ever.  Today, more than a week after Christmas, we were gifted the words “anthony michael hall community.”  The fact that it’s a holiday clip makes it all the more perfect.

Anthony Michael Hall with a mustache.  A brawl in fake snow.  Chevy throwing punches indiscriminately.  Florence + the Machine.  Can’t do much better than that.

But we’re going to try!  As a bonus, here’s a clip of Anthony Michael Hall from his ill-fated stint on the ill-fated tenth season of SNL (along with Robert Downey, Jr!  Also ill-fated!):

We’re going to Applebees!

On the Last Day of the Year: The Best Show of 2010 and Nine Other Good Ones

Unbelievably, we’re about to enter our third calendar year in existence.  It seems like just yesterday we were scrambling to put together our best of the decade lists (which makes sense, because we didn’t actually post one of those until this week).  In 2011 we hope to be even more timely, on-point and just plain better.  Until then, let’s try to end 2010 on a high note with our not-at-all anticipated Best Shows of the Year:

1. Community: This was an absolute no-brainer.  Far and away Community was the most original, ambitious, rewarding, warm, funny, creative, fearless show of 2010.  It was just a little over a year ago when the show delivered its holiday episode, “Comparative Religion” (featuring mustachio’d Anthony Michael Hall), and we began to feel then that the show was truly building towards something special.  When Community returned in January of this year it began what should be considered one of the greatest runs of any comedy series in television history, playing “can you top that?” with itself from week to week.  Solid episodes like “Investigative Journalism” with Jack Black,  “Physical Education” with a nearly naked Joel McHale, and the truly superb Goodfellas tribute “Contemporary American Poultry” culminated in the single best episode of 2010 across the board, the paintball-splattered, action movie homage masterpiece “Modern Warfare” (we know that we’ve already proclaimed the greatness of this episode, but it’s worth doing over and over again).

Keep reading: More on why Community is the best show of 2010. And 9 other good ones…

Christmas Clipdown: For the Kids

Twenty years later, Home Alone is quickly becoming one of our all-time favorite  movies.  What’s interesting is that now we enjoy the middle section just as much (if  not more) than the third act battle between Kevin and the Wet Bandits (the defense of the McCallister house was infinitely more appealing to a 7-year-old).   These days we’re more interested in how Kevin confronts life in the absence of his family, under the assumption that he must now fend for himself.  Once buzz of  jumping on the bed and the eating bowl after bowl of ice cream and going through Buzz’s stuff wears off, Kevin realizes he needs to be the man of the house.   Never has a kid grown up quicker.  Like this scene when he pays for groceries with a coupon no less! (fun fact: we’ve always kind of had a crush on the check out girl.  Just liked her skeptical yet caring tone.  So, Tracy J. Conor, when you no doubt read this, know that your work has not gone unnoticed).

Vodpod videos no longer available.

But our least favorite part of the film is that Kevin doesn’t have a chance to find out if those microwave dinners are any good.  As you all remember, he prepares the mac and cheese, but before he can sample the “nutritious meal” the clock strikes eight and he quickly runs off to get ready for the impending attack.  That always bothered us.  Take a fucking bite, dude!  Would it slow you down that much?  Would the timing of Angels With Filthy Souls have been thrown off entirely?  Would one little taste have doomed the blow torch booby trap?  C’mon man, just shovel in one forkful.  Just one!  You need your energy.

Also, maybe Kevin would wave to Old Man Marley if he didn’t look like a deranged psychopath.  Maybe lose the beard and the coat.

But outside of those two minor objections, just a heck of a film.

And have yourself a Merry Little Christmas!

We Haven’t Watched the Rest of ‘SNL’, But this is Easily the Highlight of the Season

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Amazing.

Just goes to show that grassroots efforts can be effective! (specifically grassroots efforts involving late night sketch comedy shows)

Although, we guess Cookie Monster’s apparent affection for the dude does lend credence to the theory that the blue guy perpetually has the munchies.

Great Month for Spike Lee and ‘Do the Right Thing’ Tributes

First, Children’s Hospital, which enjoyed an absolutely genius smart-silly-stupid-absurd first season on Adult Swim, ended the episode “Hot Enough For You” with these completely random, wholly enjoyable Do the Right Thing-inspired closing credits.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

That was awesome.  But then our friends, the gals over at Broad City, went ahead and blew that out of the water with this unbelievably brilliant Spike Lee homage that served as their season finale:

Beyond words. Mini-masterpiece.

Well, since all good things (and celebrity deaths) come in threes, we have to imagine there’s a third Spike Lee-esque joint coming down the pike.  Who will it be?  Sesame Street, we’re looking in your direction (oh, looks like these guys already sorta did it).
