Jason Sudeikis About to Become the Sort of Celebrity He’s Currently Creeping Out

In three days Jason Sudeikis will host the 2011 MTV Movie Awards and he’ll officially have achieved a new level of fame, joining the esteemed ranks of such past hosts as Will Smith, Ben Stiller, and Mike Myers (and for some reason Lisa Kudrow).  And with Horrible Bosses coming out this July, in which Sudeikis shares top billing with Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jennifer Aniston (2nd Friends actress in as many sentences!), Sudooks is poised to claim a spot on the A-List.  That’s still a few weeks away, but soon we’ll look back with fondness at moments like this, when Suds was still (barely) small-time enough to believably irritate some of Hollywood’s best, prettiest young actresses.  Although, even now, it’s a big stretch.

And one more.

And, for good measure, one classic MTV Movie Awards clip.

Twinsies: ‘Teen Mom’ Edition

A few months back we were drawn into MTV’s Teen Mom 2 for a number of reasons.  There was Kailyn, the Target employee who was living in her baby daddy’s parent’s basement.  There was Leah and her fiance Corey, who must endure a physical malady affecting of one their adorable twin daughters.  And there was Chelsea, the Teen Mom who kicked her loyal best friend out of the house in favor of her toolbag boyfriend, who, in fact, may not own a shirt.

But what truly caught our attention was Teen Mom Jenelle, and more specifically her explosive, expletive-laden relationship with her mother Barbara.  And we couldn’t stop thinking to ourselves “Who does Barbara remind us of?”  And finally it came to us.  The answer, we’re pleased to announce, is Megan Mullally’s Lydia in Party Down.  See?

Riiiiight?

Go ahead.  Compare and contrast.

Kieran’s Korner In Memorium: A Eulogy For the Compact Disc (And the Worst It Had to Offer)

Jumped the Snark presents, with pleasure, the latest thoughts from Mr. Kieran Walsh:
They were shiny.   They were round.  After breaking the dorm room mirror I used one to comb my hair for an entire semester of college (true!)

And, now, suffice to say, they’re pretty much dead.

I’m referring, of course, to the Compact Disc.

Oh, you can still find them.  Most of the big music stores are closed, of course.  No more Tower Records.  Alas, Sam Goody.  Whither Virgin…

Yes, strictly speaking, CDs are still out there and, as long as what little I understand of economics still holds true in our increasingly bizarre post-TARP universe, they should be for a while.

But in terms of the popular imagination—in terms of being the de facto medium for pre-recorded music—the Compact Disc is history.

Read on: Kieran mourns the Compact Disc by mining thrift stores to put together the list of the Top Ten Used CDs.

Gallagher Defines WTF

Say what you want about Gallagher, that he’s a homophobic, racist, sexist, xenophobe, sure, but he’s also a first-rate entertainer.  And he can also be immensely entertaining, as we found out in the latest WTF Podcast with Marc Maron.  Listen at your own peril.

We’ve admitted to having a soft spot for Gallagher, having vivid memories of watching his stand up specials that were replayed on Vh1 in the early 90s, and, in fact, seeing him live when he played Westbury Music Fair in the late 90s (and he was totally generous about autographing the t-shirt we had our parents buy us).  While we certainly don’t agree with his politics, or really any of his views in general, we still think he’s gotten somewhat of a raw deal, at least in terms of the perception of his career.  He might be hanging on now, truly a lion in winter, and his act might have gone off the rails, but there’s no denying he was a star for a time, and that few comedians have achieved the degree of success that he did.  And, in fact, his most popular bit was his undoing, as the watermelon smashing Sledge-O-Matic routine has unfortunately come to define him (well, maybe until now), obscuring the more creative, cerebral parts of his act.

It’s doubtful we’ll ever witness a full-fledged Gallagher comeback.  By now he seems to have lost or screw or two.  Or perhaps he was always missing a couple, but their absence just manifested itself in less crazy and bitter ways.  But at least we know that if our car ever gets stuck on a bridge that Gallagher has our back.

It Certainly Does Zuck: Jesse Eisenberg Meets His Maker On ‘SNL’

This past weekend’s SNL could have been the funniest of the season and it probably wouldn’t have mattered.  That it wasn’t the funniest of the season also will not matter years from now.  No, what this episode is being talked about for, the reason that it will ultimately be remembered, is that it featured the first public meeting between Jesse Eisenberg and the social network magnate he portrayed to the tune of a Best Oscar nomination.  It was a worlds colliding, fabric of the universe fraying, I’m seeing double (four Zuckerbergs!), moment (although Andy Samberg’s presence as a tertiary Zuckerberg carried much less weight and meta-significance).  It was awkward, sure, but that was by design, as the two ‘bergs, Eisen and Zucker, seemed rather comfortable with each other, indeed, giving the sense that they may, in fact, be bros.  The tone was less confrontational and more self-congratulatory, as if Eisenberg and Zuckerberg had successfully pulled the wool over our eyes, that the real Zuckerberg is not an unnaturally focused, perennially scowling, monotone misanthrope, but a laid back, dorky, goofball visionary, and that perhaps Zuckerberg was in the on the joke the whole time.  Now, that’s not the case, but if there’s any sense of animosity between the two ‘bergs, then Zuckerberg is a far greater actor than anyone is giving him credit for (and by all accounts he’s a terrible, terrible actor).

But, more importantly, what does this mean for SNL? And for Mark Zuckerberg? And WAS anything funny?

‘The Jenny McCarthy Show’ was the Singlest Most Important Sketch Comedy Program of the 1990s

Well, no.  Not even close.  But over on the terrific comedy blog Splitsider we take a closer look at the overlooked legacy of the ill-fated, short-lived MTV show.

And, while you’re here, check out this brilliant instructional video parody from the show, written by Delocated‘s Jon Glaser and featuring Mr. Show‘s Jay Johnston and John Ennis, one of the few comedic high points for The Jenny McCarthy Show.

Gratuitious Search Term Bait of the Day: Teenage Wasteland

We’re lucky enough to post one of our all-time favorite clips today, thanks to the popular search terms “miranda cosgrove and justin bieber.”  Those words have probably brought more teenage girls and middle age men to this site than any other.  They likely realized pretty quickly that this site really isn’t for them, but we were happy to have them nonetheless.

From the wayback machine, here’s a young Justin Bieber calling out at Kanye at the 2009 VMAs:

They look SO young!

(and now we just sit back and watch the page views roll in)

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Dental Hygiene

This was our first tough one: “toothbrush the state video”

Unfortunately, we’ve been thwarted in our efforts in the past to upload this State sketch to the webs.  And even if we wanted to try it again, we don’t currently have our QuickTime copy of that sketch at our disposal (snowed in!).  So, instead, we’re going to do three things:

1. A still from the sketch! (REMEMBER, this is just a screenshot)

2. A link to our fantastically popular (by our standards) list of the Top Ten The State Sketches.

3. Another State sketch in lieu of “Toothbrush.”  To keep the festive mood going through New Years, we’ve decided on “Chip’s Party.”  Enjoy!

Vodpod videos no longer available.

And this is not an excuse or a substitute, but just a few morsels to tide you over.  Somehow, Toothbrush will come back to us.

‘Idol’ Flashback: Seacrest Sucker Punches Chris Daughtry

If there was any justice in this (reality TV) world, last night’s American Idol would have been a double (and perhaps even triple) elimination, with at least Tim Urban joining Paige Miles on the way out the door, and with neither securing a spot on the Idol Summer tour.  But at least with Tim on the tour the producers won’t have to worry about a shortage of crying, screeching 13-year old girls.

But since the only surprise last night was not who went home but who didn’t, we thought we’d take a look back at a true Idol elimination shocker, one of our favorite pieces of video in the history of video.

Love how Seacrest just slides it in there, like Hanks at the Oscars.  It really seems like it takes a few seconds for everyone to realize what had happened, or perhaps  they expected this to be one of Seacrest’s customary teases; “Chris, you are going home tonight…to get ready next week’s top 3 show!”  But no, the journey was over, just like that.

And that, friends, is how you do an Idol elimination.

Apparently Billboard Didn’t Drive Around in My Maxima During College

Because if they did they would know that Vanessa Carlton is much more than a One-Hit Wonder.*

I take umbrage with this:

I mean they say it right there, there was a little song called “Ordinary Day,” which, as I recall, was no slouch.

And has Billboard never heard of “White Houses?”  That song only went all the way to #1 in China.  And here I thought Billboard was supposed to be the authority on music.  Guess I was wrong.  Guess it’s China.

Evidently Billboard wasn’t in my car when we rolled down the windows and blasted Vanessa Carlton while waiting on the Wendy’s drive-thru line at 1am all those times.  Their loss.

The full list of alleged “One-Hit Wonders” of the 2000s.

*Her list of hits is even longer if you confuse her with Michelle Branch as I often did (do).
