Muppet Tuesday: Cookie, Cookie, Cookie; Rexamining Cookie Monster

A short, fun Muppet Tuesday inspired by a video referred to us by The Geoff Man and last week’s Top Chef.

As far as Sesame Street characters go, we don’t remember being particularly enamored with Cookie Monster as a child.  Certainly, we weren’t fans of that red menace Elmo, but our allegiances laid more with Ernie and that other blue monster, Grover (probably because of his aural resemblance to Yoda, his brother in Frank Oz-helmed arms).  And, of course, we appreciated and admired Kermit, not just for being the straight man who tolerated all the zany creatures on Sesame Street, but because we were thoroughly impressed that he managed to moonlight as the “Muppet News” reporter while managing the Muppets full-time.  That guy was basically the 70s and 80s version of Joel McHale  (But really, Kermit can’t count as a favorite, because he’s a given, it’s like saying the Beatles are your favorite band (which they are not).  Hall of Fame members are not options)).  But for some reason, while not disliking Cookie Monster, he never struck the same chord as the others.  Perhaps because he wasn’t as silly-mean as Grover, or childlike and mischievous as Ernie.  He seemed rather one-note, heck bent on one thing and one thing alone, and that obscured a rather winning personality.  But with his SNL audition tape, his appearance on the show with Jeff Bridges, and his guest-judging on Top Chef last week, our opinion towards the pastry pouncer began to change.  With hs newly discovered nuanced sense of humor Cookie Monster was evolving into our favorite Sesame Street Muppet .  Except that, as this vintage video shows, that sharp sensibility was there all along.  We just missed it until now.  Somehow, Cookie Monster might actually be the subtlest monster on Sesame Street.

And, as usual, we plan to recap last week’s Top Chef just before the new one airs tomorrow night, but take a look at this behind the scenes clip from featuring Cookie Monster, along with Telly and, yes, Elmo, hilariously kinda being dicks to the crew.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

And we now realize where Barbara Walters got it from…

And if just one, just one, 3 year-old decides they prefer Cookie Monster to Elmo then we’ll be happy.

Muppet Monday: We’d Like to Forget This

This doesn’t thrill us.  In fact, we don’t like this at all.  But we feel like we’re kind of obligated to acknowledge its existence.

But thank goodness Cee Lo wasn’t backed by Kermit or Fozzie or The Electric Mayhem or any other significant Muppet.  That would have been a bitter pill to swallow.  No bigtime Muppet of mine should ever collaborate with Gwyneth Paltrow.

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Hail to the Chef

Well, after a Muppetless week, you’re going to get a second dose tonight, along with another helping of blog stalwart SNL, as today’s search term is “swedish chef andy samberg.”  But since we’ve already done a Swedish Chef post for this feature, and we sample enough Andy Samberg on this blog, we’re going to blend SNL and culinary expertise to bring you this little entree, one of our all-time favorites:

Vodpod videos no longer available.

And if you had your heart set on Andy Samberg as the Swedish Chef, here’s a little dessert.

Danza Moment of the Week: Muppet Love

It’s Thursday night and we haven’t mentioned the Muppets once this week, so it’s time to kill two birds with one stone.  Well, more accurately, one large bird and one big ham, and instead of a stone it’s a tennis ball.  And we’re not killing them so much as gently mocking them.

Tony Danza is just like us!  He learned to count from Sesame Street (JK, Tony! JK!)

Muppet Monday: What Do ‘Muppet Babies’ and IKEA Have In Common?

Well, I’m sure you could come up with a couple good answers for this question.  Both are good Saturday morning past times.  Both can be found in many countries (we assume).  Both are two of our favorite things.  But what we have in mind is something else.  A whatchamacallit.

When we came upon this item in the IKEA marketplace we only thought of one thing: the episode of Muppet Babies in which Kermit and Fozzie find one of these in the basement and the little Muppets use their imaginations to suggest various uses for the gadget, including a microphone, intergalactic cheeseburger maker, dinosaur head, alphabet soup strainer and something called the “Mupp0-Matic” (thanks, Fozzie).  And even though Nanny eventually explains the actual use of the item the kids refuse to let their creativity be stifled.  To top it all off, the episode is titled “Muppets Not Included,” a reference to the 1987 Steven Spielberg-produced film *Batteries Not Included.  What other late 1980s children’s cartoon had such deep subtext, tapping into the cultural zeitgeist?  None.

And Parts 2 and 3.

Open your minds, people!

Muppet Monday: The Man Behind the Fur

Quick one today!  Check out a featurette about Being Elmo, an upcoming documentary about Kevin Clash, better known as the puppeteer behind the little red Muppet monster (also known as the voice of Splinter in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films).  As much as we resent Elmo for obscuring the other Muppets on Sesame Street (and, to some extent, watering down the show’s material), we most certainly respect Clash’s body of work.

And we also respect the filmmakers for resisting the urge to title their documentary Tickle Me: The Kevin Clash Story.

Jim Carrey, ‘SNL’: No One Does a Thicke!

Well, we weren’t devastated.  Maybe it was because we were still ecstatic from the Jets victory, and that residual giddiness made us a little more lenient, a little looser (the beers couldn’t have hurt either).  Whatever it was, we were in a good mood, and Jim Carrey’s return to SNL didn’t ruin it.  It wasn’t a landmark episode, or a groundbreaking night, nor did they seem that they were fully back from vacation.  But, given our lofty, unrealistic, expectations, it was satisfying.  And (unfortunately), that’s enough.

And let’s, for a change, start at the top.  We often completely ignore the cold open when reviewing SNL, because it’s usually one of the weakest, least memorable parts of the show, certainly in non-election years.  We can’t pinpoint when it started exactly, but perhaps it’s been since the great Bush-Gore battle of 2000 that the cold open has almost felt obligated to be political sketch.  Often times that’s made for great, funny television (Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton, Tina Fey as Sarah Palin, occasionally Jason Sudeikis as Joe Biden), but more often than not we’re treated to a mildly amusing address from by Fred Armisen as President Obama.  It’s become predictable and somewhat boring.  So what a surprise it was for the show to begin and discover Armisen not as Obama but as NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Keep reading! More on Bloomy, Carrey nails Kunis, and a sketch made just for us…

Gratuitous Search Term Bait of the Day: Muppet Monster(s)

A relatively broad term today, simply: “muppets.”  It’s actually quite interesting, and encouraging, that someone ostensibly found our blog via the term “muppets.”  That must mean (we guess) that due to our vast library of Muppet-related posts we’re becoming one of the top results for that search.  Which is something to be proud of (right?  Please say yes).

Since the search term was so wide open we’re going to give you two clips today, that way everyone goes home happy.  First, we have this mash-up of the Muppets performing Kanye West’s “Monster,” which is all the rage today:

[sidebar:  Is the Muppet remix becoming something of a tired art?  How many times can we see some kind of Muppet mash-up until it feels derivative, devaluing both the Muppets and whatever work they are paired with?  Only time will tell.]

And, secondly, we’re happy to counter that “Monster” with the original Muppet Monsters, Little Muppet Monsters, the extremely short-lived series that was briefly paired with Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies in 1985.  Shelved after airing just three episodes, it remains when of the great Muppet oddities:

Well take the latter any day of the week.

Gratuitious Search Term Bait of the Day: Hot Stuff Coming Through

Nice and easy today with the term “swedish chef.”  But, instead of offering up a Muppet Show clip, which might have been the obvious choice, we’re going to use this as yet another opportunity to showcase one of our favorite Muppet outings, The Muppets at Walt Disney World.  This also allows us to enjoy another one of our most beloved Muppets, Beaker, who in this clip seeks out the Chef’s help in extricating himself from a rather tight situation.

And with that we’re off to make some chili!
