Four More Examples of How Jimmy Fallon is Killing it (and One That Shows Why He’s Not)

Talking up the good work that Jimmy Fallon and the Late Night crew have been doing is nothing new on this blog.  In fact, we’ve been complimenting their efforts as far back as last Fall.  But with the show celebrating its one year anniversary last week, and with the program demonstrating as much creativity and spontaneity as any show in late night today (effectively filling the absurdity vacuum left by Conan), we thought it fitting to highlight some recent clips to show how Jimmy continues to impress (and then one more to illustrate how in other respects he continues to disappoint).

Late Night has particularly excelled in slickly produced, exceptionally accurate television parodies, first with the Hills spoof 7th Floor West and then with The Real Housewives of Late Night.  The show has continued this hot streak by taking on the height of the pop culture phenomena, Lost, with their new recurring series, Late. Below is the 2nd episode, as the castaways (brought together by an elevator crash and now stranded on a creepy abandoned office floor) struggle to make sense of their new and mysterious surroundings.

Thoughts on the LOST Premiere AKA Why LOST Was the Best Show of the Last Decade

I’m not sure if I’m going to make a habit of posting weekly Lost reactions.  First of all, there are countless other bloggers who do an infinitely better job parsing the show and its mythology (Doc Jensen, Videogum, Alan Sepinwall, AV Club to name a few)  And second, I think I’d rather spend my time reading other people’s thoughts and theories than formulating my own, because immersing myself in the world of Lost and its possibilities is one of my all-time favorite pastimes.  But, in honor of the season premiere, and in light of a post I didn’t get around to writing six weeks ago, I thought I’d put finger to keyboard and deliver commentary that’s more along the lines of Ken Tucker’s, focusing not on the mythology, but on the storytelling and the characters.  Not on what the things in Lost mean, but on what is Lost‘s meaning.

OMG, Hurley Likes To Surf!

Except he likes to work on his extra spicy ranch dressing  chicken batter more.

The LOST team released another little morsel to whet our appetites before the season six premiere.  Coming on the heels of the “LOST Supper” photos, we’ve now be given a second Mr. Clucks commercial starring it’s owner/operator, Mr. Hugo Reyes (the first premiered at Comic-Con earlier year).

But what does it all mean???

Well, if I had to bet it certainly points to the theory that the castaways land safely in Los Angeles instead of crashing on the island and all becoming besties.  But Hurley also says that since he’s won the lottery he’s had nothing but good luck.  So, perhaps, when Juliet detonated the bomb it didn’t just change everything from the moment right before flight 815 originally went down on, but it actually changed the course of the Lostaways lives even before their Sydney departure.  But, really, who knows?

Perhaps Doc Jensen.

And did you notice the cost of the meal deal?  $4.42.  Whoa.

Bible Imagery! Let the ‘LOST’ Countdown/Takeover of Every Waking Moment of Our Lives Begin!

Ohmigod, I’m going to need freak out control.

Well, folks, less than a month until the final season of LOST premieres.  I’ll be honest, because the hiatus is now so lengthy between seasons, I hadn’t been thinking about the show too much lately.  And, to be franker still, the show so completely dominates my brainwaves when it’s on – between the actual episodes, the podcasts, countless blog posts, expert analysis, and chats with friends and co-workers – that I rather welcome the respite its extended break provides.  When the show is back I’m totally and utterly invested.  When it’s in the interim I rest up and allow my mind of focus on other (no less trivial) concerns; which probably explains why I’ve never really been immersed in the between season interactive games like the LOST Experience.”

However, my excitement for the conclusion began to reemerge when I spoke to a friend over the weekend who, over the last few months, had just watched all five seasons for the first time.  After an exhausting task like that her head, I imagine, must feel like Desmond’s when he ping-ponged through time (which, perhaps, makes me her constant.  An honor and a responsibility, no doubt).  As she just consumed the whole series at once, she was unable to have consistent conversations about the series, in-depth discussions about possible theories and explanations, the time to spend a week reading reactions and frustrations.  Thus, as we talked about the island, about Christian Shephard, about Ben, Jacob and the Man in Black, about the clues planted in season one, about Juliet and the H-bomb, and about the probable locations of the characters when the show returns (on the plane?  LAX?  Exactly where we left them?), her novice enthusiasm, her LOST innocence rubbed off on me, and for the first time since early summer I was really excited about the show’s impending return.  I began to remember how much I enjoy discourse around the show, and, even more, just how much I enjoy the show.

And then I saw this and the show was officially back to blowing my mind.

If You Slap Michael Scott, Does He Not Bruise? (Brief Thoughts on ‘The Office’)

And does he not need a Schrute Farms frozen chicken to ease the pain?

Well, he might bruise, but he definitely needed the makeshift ice pack.

Michael Scott: Bruised Face, Bruised EgoAfter we argued for the usefulness of the lovelorn Michael Scott earlier today, tonight’s “Double Date” served up another helping of that quixotic Scott, while also mixing in his cringe-inducing, myopic unpleasant side.  Realizing that Pam’s mom (aka “Pickle”) is a (sorta) much older woman, Michael slowly, painfully, tries to extricate himself from the relationship.  He’s selfish and inconsiderate, but in this case it’s not so much his intentions that are wrong, just his actions.  His epiphany that being with a soon to be Grandma would hinder his life plans, which still include having children (and maybe snowboarding) is understandable.  Why he didn’t see this before is open for debate, but we must keep in mind that this is Michael Scott, master of obliviousness.  However, instead of waiting another day or two, or at least until after the birthday lunch, Michael decides to break it off right then and there, just as Pam begins to accept him as a suitable mate for her mother (and perhaps as a possible step-father to herself and step-grandfather to her unborn child), creating the awkward tension that Michael has elevated to an art form over the years.  But his heart was in the right place.  Just at the wrong time.

Popular Mechanics Did Not Listen

And went ahead and over-analyzed the new Lost poster (really I just feel silly for not noticing the hieroglyphics.  Not that I would have known what they meant.).  I won’t spoil it for you, but, if you’re curious, find the translation here.

Let’s Over-Analyze The Poster For the Final Season of LOST!

No, let’s not.  The poster is simple, but awesome.  The same style they used for the previous five seasons, just a little more epic.  Not really giving too much away, but certainly raising enough questions.

Lost Final Poster

It’s a little dark, but methinks it features all of our major past and present Lostaways, including the deceased, like Boone, Charlie, and Libby.  Oh, and all the way on the right, looks like Bernard and Rose.  Yes, please.  But who is that between Jack and Locke, right in the middle.  Desmond?  Hmmm.  And is Locke’s back turned?  I wonder…okay, sorry, enough.  Just get excited.
